Is there any way of extracting the textueres in previous Tomb Raider games to use in the new Level Editor? I'm desperate to get my hands on the textures from the VCI level in Chronicles. If anybody can get them, please tell me!!!IP: Logged |

Yes, it is possible by using TRViewer available on Joseph Seymours site: http://home.acadia.net/userpages/vagrant/program.html IP: Logged |

Thanks for the tip, but I'm still having trouble. When I load up the tile sets from chronicles, it says "no tool box available", but I can still view the files. When I try to save them as TGA files to use with the level editor, it doesn't work. As I guessed earlier, it can't change the format of the tr5 files on the disk into TGAs. Is there any way to do this, as I'm dying to make a tower block level with just puzzles, not baddis?[This message has been edited by tom992 (edited 12-20-2000).] IP: Logged |

Hey Tom!!!! You might wanna try this!!!!!! The explanation i'm about to give may sound a little complicated but here goes!!!! With TRViewer get the texture you want and save it as TGA. Next use a paint program(i use Microsoft Image Composer but you can use another as long as it isn't PAINT)to view the textures. Now open PAINT at the same time and from the other paint program cut the textures and paste them on PAINT. On PAINT save the textures as BMP. Back on the other paint program open the BMP with the textures and save as TGA, and you should be able to use them as you see fit. BTW, on Image Composer when you save the file it shows you what color format you want to save in, for the textures you HAVE to save in true color and chek the box for keep transparency. This worked really well for me, but i still had to go around the wholle situation a few times before i got it right, it was really frustrating. You say that on tr viewer you can't get the textures tool box for TR5, but you can't get the toolbox for any other textures from any TR. At least i couldn't!!!!!!!!! I'm currently using the textures from Midas Palaces from TR1, i'm actually doing the whole level on TR4 engine, cool huhn!!!!??? Oh and one more thing!!!!!! There is another program for viewing textures, you can find it at http://www.trww.com/technics/. And i'm sure you'll find a lot of other things, like a viewer for TR levels from TR1 to TR3, or how do you think i could build the hole level for Midas Palaces???!!!!! Pleasure to be of help!!!!!

Thanks for the instructions, I understood them clearly enough but when I try to open the TGA file I created, my paint programs (Ulead Photoimpact and Microsoft Picture It) keep saying messages like "Invalid" and "File is unrecognised or invalid". I tried using the Jack thing to view files from TR5 but it only does Tr 1-4. Could you suggest anything?IP: Logged |

HMMMMM!!!!!! That IS a setback!!!!!! But still i think we can find a solution!!! You say you tried Ulead Photoimpact and Microsoft Picture it, a solution might go trhough getting Image composer or some other program that leeds with graphic management from the net. You don't necessarily need the hole program, just the trial version, witch you can keep on your computer for indeterminate time. Try going to www.superdownloads.com.br/index.cfm Now the site is Brasilian i think but you can still find a lot of things there mainly freeware of all sorts including graphic management programs. I think the reason for you not being able to open the file is that the programs that you use are more for image treatment(but since i never used them i can't say for sure). I just got another texture from TR5 through TRViewer. Are you sure you're doing it right??!!!!(maybe you're doing something wrong and you haven't realized it) All you have to do is open the texture and save the first one as TGA, since of course that is the only way to save it, or as it says there export it. Keep in mind also that when and if you manage to finally put the texture in the editor some of the textures won't fit the specified space for them. To solve this all you have to do is cut part of the texture that doesn't matter, namely the part that has the textures for meshes(just another name for objects, but attention you can't use these to texture the objects in the wads).
That's all, i think!!!!! I'll do some more research on this to see if i can find you another solution. Get back as soon as you find one!!!!!

Actualy, it does not matter if the textures don't match: the textures for the WAD object are in the WAD itsel and, unless you are using some extractor, you cannot modify them. All the textures you see on the right side influence the polygons only. I know, I tried a level with only *one* beige texture and all objects were unchanged but all walls, ceiling and floors were beige (including the level loading scene).IP: Logged |

Thanks, I didn't know that you had to right click on the directory of your graphics. I got it to save and now my paint programs have recognised it. I'lll get back to you whether it worked or not.IP: Logged |
