I got a small problem with newcity.wad. I did a few large rooms connected with doors, with windows ceiling (like in TR2 - the first Platform level when Lara is imprisonned).

Depending on where I move in that room, the horizon disappears from time to time, depending where Lara looks.

Anyone?...

Did you copy all the dat files into the Root directory? Have you put ths newcity script into the script.txt file and run the script.exe?

Yes, and actually I can see the horizon in other rooms, and all the rest works. But in that large room, horizon appears and disappears, apparently randomly, or depending where Lara stands.

Are you sure it's not distant walls poping into existance and therefore obscuring the horizon? At large distances they tend to appear black.

I actually thought that might have been the case, but there are no distant walls in the direction I was looking.

I mean the problem is not really dramatic, but it just looks a bit weird to see the horizon & sky disappear...

Exact same problem here; it would almost appear that within a 180 degree radius the sky and the horizon are properly displayed, and if Lara turns beyond this radius, both disappear.

P.S.:

Mind you, I've also tried this using other wads, and the same problem occurs...

Solutions, anyone?

How large is your 'large' room? Son't forget the limitations of the engine!!! Only so many polygons can be drawn at any given time....remember in the tutorial where the pillar was placed in the hall so the line of sight wouldn't exceed 18 squares? This is about the limitation before the ugly black void creeps into the horizon....if you have combined rooms with a distance greater than this (and don't forget to calculate diagonally!) you will experience this problem. It takes clever planning to create illusions of vast open space while working around this limitation. Check out the coastal ruins level to see how Core dealt with it...that level is amazingly open in feeling...I think sometimes you can see the 'void' if you look for it, but it is cleverly hidden in the dark shadows of the hills.....

Right! Thanks... that'll probably be the problem, though some rooms are actually relatively small, all the rooms together are form a rather large constellation ;-)

I'll try to see if I can work around this, and, if not, I'll just use extra rooms containing objects to form something to block the view to the horizon.

Thanks very much,
Best regards,
Striffelbuur.
