I already brought up this topic just a few months back, but I thought it would be a good thing to post it up again - so please bear with me
I'd like to apologize beforehand if I start ranting too much...For those of you who are like me and really likes to get into their level designing (by this I mean such as making custom texture maps, building custom WADs and objects, etc.), then you'd probably realized by now how difficult it is to find the resources that you need over the internet. I've pretty much seen every texture or 3D model site there is, and I usually come out with nothing. Even though most of these sites are jam packed with textures and such, their only problem is just that - they are jam packed with them. It takes you forever to find what you want through the masses of websites and categories and it just isn't worth it.
Just a while back, I discovered a solution to this problem. Turbo Squid (not quite sure how they came up with that name) is the perfect place for any level designer. It is a program that allows you to log on to a community and then trade any form of art files that you have on your computer such as Targa (.tga), Bitmap (.bmp), 3D Studio (.3ds), AutoCAD (.dxf), etc. The membership is free, the storage space is free, every aspect of it is free. I see this as a great opportunity for all of us here in this forum and others alike. With access to files so quickly this would not only make it easier for us but it would increase the speed and quality of the levels that we make.
Currently, the Turbo Squid community is mildly populated, mostly because it's fairly new, but that is expected to change over time. Just recently, I spoke with one of the designers of the program. He told me that over the next few months, they were planning on taking a pretty big swing towards level designing due to some new technology being developed. Apparently, some sort of program is coming out that will let you edit level from any game, and that includes objects as well. The Turbo Squid community will be adjusting for when that comes about.
Sorry, to go all sales-like on you guys, but I really think we should take advantage of this and get the Tomb Raiders set up in there. And no, in case any of you are wondering I don't work as some promoting guy for them - I'm just 15 and I mow lawns for a living
. I just think this is a great idea to help out all of us. So, if anyone one is interested in this (and I hope you all are) just click here, and if not then please think about it.
Thank you so much for reading all of this - I know it takes a lot of patience to read through something like this, and I appreciate it. Rock on.
