Well, if you change the meshes and you DON'T want to import them again in the wad there are NO problem: instead if you one day decide to import them, there are if you use too many polygons! In any case, I have two tips for you for texturing. You can draw a big texture. (I did it for normal textures for my upcoming level).
For example: a texture that shows a door then a windows, then some decorations: all IN THE SAME BMP!
In this way, you can DIVIDE this BIG texture in many more very little! So, when you put them in the 3D modelling they will be rightly tiled! even if the meshes are NOT square polygons.... couse every program (I mean the programs I use and even the STRpix) interpole them when they are put one next to the other: so, the line in common among two next polygons is interpolated in the same way for each other.... the textures are squared, but it works even if the polygons are trapezoids, just because they have that line in common interpolated in the same way.
For triangled meshes you simply have to try, couse I think it depends on the program you use....
I hope this is not so difficult, cause it is to explain in English....
Well, if you decide to build a person for example, you can draw all the bust like it is a plan page, then divide the bmp in as many textures as you need (for textures which are going to texture next polygons, you have to chose the same dimensions! in order when the two next polygons are interpolated, they change in the same way). In this way you WON'T see difference of colour in the 3D model textured meshes. Neither you will see when a polygons "passes" to another. For the difficult body parts which are hard to texture, you can try with little texture with only one colour.
I mean, you can do all of this if you are REALLY patient (like I am NOT) and you can use very hardly CAD and Photo programs.
The second tip is this.... (don't you think professional person do in this way????).
Professionists use 3D painting programs! this means that you can PAINT the textures in the 3D view! nice, uh?
I found for you this shareware program that does it: I did not try it, so I don't even know if this progam can do what it promises.... but in the readme file says it does. I don't even know its limitations.... So try it.
The program for the 3D painting (and unbelievable, for 3D animations even SKELETONAL!!!!) is this:
REALSOFT 3D
you can find the last version here:

Hope this helps!
