Okay, I know it sounds wacky, but a friend of mine is convinced the original Tomb Raider game is loosely based on a true story. We've got a bet going on this, so I need your feed back.

According to my friend, it's all loosely based on a girl named Abigail Croft. Abby lived in England during the late 1800s in a place called Huddersfield (is there even such a place?) Anyway, she was the daughter of an eccentric archeologist named Henry Croft. Henry began an expedition to find Atlantis. His knowledge was primarily based on the findings of Lewis Spence, a Scottish mythologist and historian (keep in mind, this was before psychic Edgar Cayce really got everybody going on the whole thing.) Needless to say, not too many people were willing to go along with him on this venture, and so he allowed his daughter to come along for companionship. Their search took them to Azore islands, rumored to be the tips of Atlantean mountains. Henry fell ill with malaria about a month into the expedition, and eventually died. Abigail, only 18 at the time, decided to continue the expedition on her own. She never returned home.
Of course, Eidos took several liberties with the character. Abigail, according to the story, abhored violence (and never killed a t-rex!)

Anyway, I say my friend's just pulling my leg. What do y'all think?

a fine story indeed! but the facts are that
TombRaider creator Toby Gard was influenced
by the Indiana Jones movies...

in turn, the Indy Jones character was
inspired by a real person:
Dr. Roy Chapman,

explorer of the Gobi Desert &
other places(1920's)who was an
admirer of:

1840's adventurer John Lloyd Stevens (discovered the Mayan cities of
the Yucatan...)

it all comes around...

Come on people, get your facts straight!!!

Considering I am FROM Huddersfeld (not "field"), I think I know a little bit about the topic and can speak with a degree of authority. There is an Abigail Croft, and her father (whose name was either Henry or Harry, no one is sure) was an archeologist (and aren't they all eccentric, by definition). Everyone likes to think there is an Atlantis, but of course that is only myth. They did travel to the Azore islands, and he did fall ill, although I have not found any documentation of the specific illness. He passed on shortly after, although she was in her early 20's, not her late teens. And for the record, it is was in Australia, when Abigail was in her early 30's that she did, indeed, fell the last remaining T-Rex. Doubt me? It's the TRUTH!

HA HA! Thank you MichaelB!! You know how to play along with a joke! Glad to see we aren't all taking Tomb Raider too seriously.

By the way, you're wrong about Huddersfield... my spelling was correct. I may be a "Yank," but I've been to Huddersfield several times to visit relatives (none of them named Abigail Croft, mind you.)

Now I'm the mood for a nice, big greasy porkchop...

Well, if the spelling of the town is the only point you all take exception with, then it seems I got away pretty clean!
