Learning C++ will take you about 4 months, sharping your programing skill will take you 5 months. (al so you will need to get about 1-2 years experience)

Learning C++ will not include learning about 3d programing, if you want to do 3d stuf you will have to buy a 3d engine library for be used with your C++ compiler.

if you code the 3d engine yourself then you will have to learn 3d maths, matrices, vectors, advadced algebra, then coding the engine, this will take you about 14 months.

Then you can start coding a game, how much time will take you?, current comercial games take from 12-24 months (working severals peoples on in full time every day, even sundays)

Tomb raider 1-5 took a year each (working about 4 people full time every day) using a based 3d engine.

But if you get succesfull, you can get a job in a video game company.

Oh, i almost forgot to tell you, writing programs IS NOT FUN LIKE building levels or using CAD programs, most the time it is a pain in the *** .

If you are thinking serius about thism i suggest you to go to the collage get formal studies about this.

Good luck,

tp.

well, or you can buy a 3d game engine, currently the best availibles are quake 3 engine, (curved surfaces, smoot polygons), and the UNREAL engine, both make awesome good looking games.

But you must pay for the engine and then give a % for each unit that you sold.

Also there are some royalty free game engines out there.

You don;t have to be a programmer for work in a video game, you can be the Grafic Artis, this person will use the CAD program for built, design, texture all model used in the game,

Original Lara croft was invented for Toby Gard, (Graphics artis), and the game was mainly coded for Paul Douglas (programmer)

also there are the game dessigner, sound artist, level dessigner. etc.

You can probably find some free C++ engines but they will not be suitable for a game to be sold in shops.

You must remember that there is AI programming to be done and animation etc - it is nowhere as simple as TR editing unless you write your own LE.

You should really become fluent in C++ before you start otherwise you will end up re-writing your game whenever you learn a new trick.

Kindest regards,

Ben

Only a little part of the computer branche is concerned with making PC Games, the most programmers work in firms which make inndividual application software for other firms. It#s not so easy to become a Game Programmer.
