I put a guy in the animating slot and when he is triggered he just keeps walking through everything. i even placed boxes, and he kept on going, and going, and going. it's not like he's the energizer bunny or anything. how do i change his course, or even keep him standing still.

The game sees him is an animation not as a baddy. A WAD file contains more then just meshes and textures. It has also some animation settings (eg how a door will open, ...). The game triggers this animation, which in your case will be walking, as it has no AI assigned because it is an animation for the game, he will walk straight on.
