After talking to Redlegg about it we agree that there needs to be a Limit on Sig siz...not to stifle artistic creativity but for the benefit of people who access the Forums via Dial-up. Large sigs or Images Really Slow Things Down. The key really has to do with File Size more than Screen Size. The File Size of your Sig pic or an IMG posted should be Below what we consider the Upper Limit of 30k, where the size of the file begins to take a real toll on download speed for somebody with a modem. So from our perspective, which is based on trying to make the Forums accessible to All, a Given Sig does not really cause a problem as long as it is Less Than 30k. The "Tolerable Limit" for Screen Size of a Sig should take into consideration the Rest of The Forum and How Tired they get of scrolling past your sig. 400x300 might be a Tad large...but not overmuch. It is a matter for the Community to decide. If Everybody thinks your Sig is too big or if We (Redlegg41 or Myself) receive complaints from Forum Members about the Size of your Sig ("Oh My God!! I've never SEEN one That Big before!! It's HUGE!!!") then you should Trim it down a bit or not post it All the Time. The Moderators of the Tomb Raider Forum, GoranAger and John Carter have requested that Sig size be kept at around 200x150 pixels for ease of viewing. Since this is a Different Forum I leave it to the Community to talk about a bit and come to some agreement.GM IP: Logged |

I agree that the file size should be less than 30k. I also think that it doesn't matter if it's wide, but the height shouldn't go above 100 pixels because scrolling past anything higher becomes slow. Finally, I think that the sig should only be posted on the first reply you make to a thread, i.e. once only within a thread. So, to summarise: Size: must be 30k or less. Height: Must be 100 pixels or less. Width: Less than 450 pixels. Use: Ideally on first posted reply to topic, otherwise once only within the topic. What do you think the limits should be? I totally agree with you that yuo should only post your sig once in any post. It's not so bad if you just have a simple link, but it is when you have a large picture that it begins to cause problems. The only thing I'm not sure about is the height, 100 isn't really that much. For example, your pic WBM is 98 in height, now if you wanted to put any text under that then it would exceed the limit. So maybe there should be a set size for the picture and then only a certain number of lines of text allowed? What do you think of that idea?------------------ click the above picture to go to my site Emma: Stop it! Driber_IF: Stop it! Emma: Scary!

My thought on this matter is that if a sig is quite tall and it is posted in every post, then it is unacceptable to expect people with slow connection to watch the same pic/advert appear one after another, and then to find that the thread wasn't worth reading in the first place. Such threads should almost certainly be closed. If everyone could keep their sig to a universally acceptable size, say no more than 200 pixals high (or 100 pixals if text is also displayed) then everyone will be happy. Also the idea that, if anyone wishes to keep their sig the size that it already is, then they should only post it once in any thread; this sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Dhama.

Yes but Kiopo, it's not just that, it is also the amount of room that it takes up on the page. Plus the fact that you post it in ever reply that you make.IP: Logged |

Hi Emma, I think that's a good idea. I was referring to the height of the image only when I mentioned the height (100 pixels) but the text is a different issue which does also need to be addressed. quote: Originally posted by Dhama: Also the idea that, if anyone wishes to keep their sig the size that it already is, then they should only post it once in any thread; this sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
Dhama, This could be a solution to those wishing to keep large sigs. So, with your idea and Emma's we could arrive at the following guidelines: Sig must only be posted once within each topic. Sig image height limit = e.g. 200 pixels. Maximum of 3 lines of text (line breaks included). Anyone else got suggestions on this topic?

Hmmm, my humble point of view: stop the debate, if there is no systemic way (ie automatically ensured by the forum software) to ensure the guidelines (whatever they are) are being adhered to. Because if there is not, it will not work anyway and you can happily waste your time as mods closing topics with sigs that do not follow those guidelines Because there will always be forum members like Kiopo (no offense, just making an example), who just don't care that they annoy other folks with their large and ever repeated sig, because they themselves like it so much. As said, just my point of view. I, for one, will try my best to stick to the new rules once they are defined (and will stop posting my sig multiple times in the same thread immediately). Good luck, anyway...it's a tough job, but somebody has to do it, I guess ------------------ HAPPY RAIDING! Michael. IP: Logged |

I agree WBM, and I believe it would be a good balance. Another way to balance those who think these are tough guidelines to follow, is to periodically (say weekly perhaps) have a thread based soley on adverts for the members so that they can advertise their TR site, and where the size of the sig would not be an issue, (within reason and of course below 30k) and would have a limit of 100 posts before being closed.

Hi Michael,
It would be perfect if the system automatically did it for us. Better still, an automatic moderator.. that would be bliss. I believe that most people are mature enough to follow whatever guidelines we've all agreed to but only if they have been part of the process which defines the guidelines. This is why I would like to see as many people as possible take part in this debate.. Anyone else got any more ideas?

Or, how about a permanent 'Site Links' thread at the top of the page? Someone suggested that there should be a link like this to cut down on the 'Give me your links' types of topics. Having a permanent link at the top of the page could, like you say, give people the opportunity to have a large ad (less than 30k), and include the most recent info regarding their links. Each person could re-edit their post whenever they wanted to, and if more than 100 individuals posted, we could always open a new 'top of the page' link.. IP: Logged |

Okay, to summarise our ideas so far:----------------- WITHIN THE FORUM: Sig must only be posted once within each topic. Sig image height limit = 200 pixels. Sig image width limit = 480 pixels. Maximum of 3 lines of text (line breaks included). Or you can have: No image. Maximum of 10 lines of text (line breaks included). ----------------- WITHIN THE PERMANENT (top of the page 'Links to TRLE Sites') LINK:
Sig must only be posted once within this topic (you may edit your post at any time). Sig image height limit = 600 pixels, but must be less than 30k in size. Sig image width limit = 480 pixels. Maximum of 3 lines of text (line breaks included). Or you can have: No image. Maximum of 10 lines of text (line breaks included). ----------------- [This message has been edited by Wee Bald Man (edited 08-22-2001).] IP: Logged |
