Many of you have looked into the issue of creating and triggering cutscenes and FMVs. Some of you have even started to consider creating stand alone tools. We would like to invite all of those who are interested in this subject to form a TRLE Cutscene and FMV team.

We believe that it is possible to create a tool which allows you to launch and play a video file during gameplay (and that it is possible to do this without making modifications or changes to any original executable file as supplied by Core Design Ltd and Eidos Interactive).

If we were able to launch a video file we could create the illusion of a cutscene by using low-polygon models and scenes which are rendered by existing 3D programs such as 3D Studio MAX. For those of you who wanted to create FMVs, this could be done using high-polygon models and special effects - again created in a 3D program such as 3D Studio MAX.

Another idea, is to have the tool launch an entirely separate game engine such as Half-Life or Unreal. These engines already have means of creating cutscenes. There are many possibilities..

Here is one example of what a stand alone tool could allow you to do:

1) From within the level editor, inform the tool of when to launch an external video file.

2) Once in-game, when the launch is activated, the game minimises itself.

3) An external video file is launched and plays using a standard codec such as MPEG, AVI, DivX etc.

4) When the video file is finished playing, the game is maximised and you continue the game.

The key areas which would need to be looked into are:

a) Defining how to activate an external file from within the level editor.

b) Creating a tool which could control the timing of events and is able to do so without interfering with any TR dependent operations such as DirectX.

If you are interested in joining this team, please reply to this post with any questions that you may have about this topic.

I must dissappoint you...

Eidos does has removed to abitity to play cutscenes from the exe-file.

I wanted to replay the city of the death series.
I copied all the levels and cutsequense data from the CD, created working dat-files,...

When I played the game I had 2 problems:

1) Cutscenes DIDN'T work eg those on the Title screen( yes and it was the real title from the CD not the one from TRLE). Try playing "The race for the Iris" and you'll see the effect....

2) All soundseffects (those that are in the samples folder) didn't work. Audio files did work.

Sorry Brad, but withour changes to the exe-file you are going to have problems completing this...

Well (My name's Brad not Bard) I am not really the techniqual expert here. You should talk to Kiopo and Wee Bald Man about that issue. As for the .exe file, we are planning at the moment just on how exactly to even trigger the cutscenes in-game. We have ideas on how to make a program for it, but I do not think that you should give up so easily. We will find a way.

Hence the line: "without making modifications or changes to any original executable file as supplied by Core Design Ltd and Eidos Interactive" which is included in the first message by Brad.

Well, much succes but it won't work, they have removed the ability to play cutscenes from the exe-file. Test what I stated above and you'll see that the cutscenes from the game won't work!

I have an idea: I'll trying using to DEMO exe file from Tomb Raider 4.

Thank you all for your help. I will contact you soon through emails after I talk with Kiopo and WBM. I also have figured out how a cutscene is called up from the script. I know what ResidentCut=1,5 means. No, it doesn't mean a position, it's quite simple actually. But I'll tell you later after I discuss it with WBM and Kiopo.

Hi Alexis,

Sorry it is not very clear. We are not trying to make the cutscenes activate using the original methods which have since been stripped out. In its simplest form, what we are trying to do is see whether it is possible to launch a video file - even if it means having several small applications running in the background. I agree that there is no future in trying to 'rebuild' the original methods used by Core - therefore what we are proposing is a simple program which is able to launch a video file which behaves and therefore 'looks like a cutscene'. So rather than try to make a 'real cutscene', we make what APPEARS to be a cutscene but is actually just a video file playing a PRE-RENDERED low-poygon scene. What do you think?

What programming concerns I have had a course on java, which of course isn't that suited for win32-excutables.

Great! That's really good news! Don't worry about your existing knowledge - that's why we're forming a team - so that we can share our combined knowledge and skills.

We'll email everybody as soon as we know when we're going to have our next online chat session. If you haven't got an MSN Messenger account please create one (link below) so that you can be part of the discussion.

Thanks,

WBM

Hiya guys!! This is great enthusiasm, and I must stress that, like what WBM said, we are not trying to make cut-scenes the way Core have done, but more or less trigger external files from within the editor. If we can all swap MSN addresses we can meet up later. I already have WBM and Brads, but I don't know yours Alexis, or the others for that fact.

...mmm...

There might be a way, by using automation.

I will do a simple experiemtn at home but maybe somebody can beat me to it.

I program in VB. I will try to see if the TR exe exposes any COM interface and i fit does, if it can be launched from another program.
If it can, that launching program then can intercept the messages and events from TR.EXE and play out whatever we wants. If not, well...

May we can use the EXE as a server that does sends messages so Binks, intercept those messages and play OUR stuff.

Will using the demo EXE work?

Anybody tried to use an ordinary TR exe file played from the HD?

TR4.exe won't expose any com interfaces to anything useful, only to the dll's and stuff. We already have a plan on including cut-scenes, I just hops it works...

I'm going to release my CutSeq viewer today! You can view the cutseq.pak file with it. It will display all available cutscenes, number of frames, and all items used in it. Maybe that will help.
