Sounds like C++ would be your best bet then. And good for you.

I keep trying to force myself to understand programming languages, but I can barely wrap my head around HTML.

Learning a programming language isnt easy and can take some people years. Others pick it up straight away. If your really interested I would start first with C++ as its the most widely used. However to make windows based programs move onto Visual Basic as its a lot easier until you get settled.

Writing a prj converter wont be easy because you will first need to know something about the format. Anyway good luck.

If you choose to use c++ i suggest you to use Borland's C++ Builder, it is sooo visual and so ease, the user's interface for your programs take few minutes to build.

I began learning programming with MSX Basic (real oldy, you freaks out there might remember that one) when I was just a kid and it was pretty easy and very fun to do
then I learned Turbo Pascal in school and eventually C++ for DOS

so yes, C would be the best one to learn and switch to visual C when you picked up the basics
Quake was also made with C, so it's a very powerfull programming language

As a long time programmer, I do have a suggestion.
Start with plain C. It allows you to learn the basic syntax and functionality without the overhead of object oriented stuff. C is simple to learn, and most C++ compilers let you program in plain C.
Once you have that down pretty good, adding the C++ classes and objects is like extra lessons. This way you don't have to learn it all at once.
