This is a shot of the main interface of my new script editing program.

If you can't see it, click here: http://members.tripod.com/trlibrary/2fcbb3b0.jpg

It is almost done - saving and loading is all perfect, but I have to fix some compiling bugs, add more customization options, as well as the automatic execution of Easylife.

This program makes editing script files easy, and makes messing up impossible.

What do you think? Are there any other functions that I missed that are needed? Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

mmm, there are already programs that can do this, and its not that hard really to edit scripts... But still, all programs are welcome in the TRLE community, so well done

Thanks Col for the piccy
Wierd, they always appear fine for me. I hardly ever get those red x's. I use IE4, maybe that's got something to do with it.

You use the program by loading script files and then selecting an object or name from the list and replacing the name with a custom one. This is very helpful if you want to change the name of the revolver to 'Desert Eagle' as is shown in the screenshot. When the ingame inventory is accessed, the revolver will be called Desert eagle instead of revolver. It is also capable of changing names of levels, enabling/disabling settings for levels, and other misc. level settings. What makes it necessary is that many times a script is edited incorrectly, and causes errors in the game. This program will not allow script editing to its fullest extent by not allowing these errors to be made.

usually tripod and angelfire do not allow direct linking to there site (your Homepage) from another site (like freeservers) or forum

tripod is a bit picky to let you do that.

It isn't done yet, I am still collecting all the script functions to include - lightning, etc...

It will be posted for download as soon as I make sure I have them all.

KingSpyder, yes it does edit the english.txt.

Pwhirl, it took me about 3 hours to get started - its written in Visual Basic.

Hi, sorry, I should have made myself more clear, I meant there are programs that can edit some parts of the script, not all of it, but this will make life easier once again, well dong

hiya, pwhirl, it is really easy to get started, especially with a programming language like visual basic.
    The only problem is cost.

While I would reccommend VB to start building programs, it is rather expensive. You can usually get a trial version with most instruction books (about $20 to 40$) the problem with those is that you can do everything but make an *.exe file with the trial version, and that's the most cool part about VB, that you can make actual .exe's that look just like they are part of windows. If you want to make exe's you will have to buy the full version, and it's really expensive. The only reason I have it is that a friend of mine bought it at the Microsoft Store for $20 because he worked there. I am only familliar with Qbasic(far too simple and limited), Visual Basic, and a smattering of C++, so I do not have a wide knowledge of programming languages. This is all the help I can give. Perhaps you can look up different programming languages and their easiness and capability, and find a balance for you. Then you can work up to more and more advanced languages (that will always exist) I'm sure that if you persist, you will find something. So you see, the problem is not learning how to program, but really rather finding the programming tools.

    Good luck,
    -Raider

You can get Java compilers for free.
And DJGPP is a free C++ compiler.

I am working on that right now. I don't know how many levels the script.txt can handle, but I am testing the limits.

If you are interested in programming, then taking a class is a great way to get a good start. I don't know html, but I have seen it and I guess its easier than actual programming, especially when compared to c or c++. Most basic languages are fairly straightforward, though. Visual basic is especially easy because first you build an interface with drag and drop menus, and its all point-and-click. The coding revolves around the menu that you built, for instance if you want to click a button and some text to print something, the code for the button would be something like

    Private Sub Command1 click()
Text1.caption = "You just clicked the button"
    End Sub

    so it is fairly simple.
I took a class in VB and I loved it. I made a BlackJack program and it worked great.
I would reccommend taking a VB class to get started if you are interested.

Compared to C++, html is nothing. I know most of html and am really quite good at munipulating it. I've been self teaching myself HTML for the last 3 years.

HTML is basically like a scripting language, very easy to learn.
Real programming languages are harder not because the language is hard, but because of the interfaces to the operating system. There can be literally thousands of them to learn, especially on Windows.
Learning real programming languages is best done in a class, because you will always have questions. If they don't get answered, you won't get very far.
