I have an idea for a very tough puzzle based level. What I`d like to do is to make it so that once solved the player discovered something that they could use to prove they had completed the level. The level would be a kind of open challenge to see who would be the first to complete it. But they`d have to email me whatever it was they found at the end of the level to prove they`d completed it. (Does this make sense?)

Anyway my question is how could I do this and make it cheat proof? A unique object could be used or it could be something written in the wall in the textures but how cheat proof would they be? How can I do something that you could only find by finishing the level?

The only full proof thing I can think of is to have symbolic textures throughout the level in a certain order. Once the level was completed the player would know all the symbols in the right order.

Any ideas anyone?

Hmm, interesting Mr Gell, you could have letters of a word scattered about each room or better still get a hotmail account and use the name before '@hotmail.com' as the puzzle and then the player would use that to email your hotmail account. The one that has done so will be victorious.

Well, you can say, "What do you find in that room?" The answer can be a sound, music, enemy, item, texture on wall, light colour, fog, water, or NOTHING!" See! There are actually a little chance for a player to guess it, unless they are REALLY lucky.

-custom textures aren't cheat proof, because anyone can rip textures from a .tr4 file
-sounds can be played with Winamp
-baddies and objects can be extracted with TRwest

so Will, if you really want to make it cheat proof, I suggest you do this:

make a room with a certan design and let the player send an ingame screenshot of that room, so you will know the player has actually been in that room

players can't see the design of a .tr4 (up to now), so that might be the only cheat proof thing you could apply here

also, be sure to make your "flycheat proof", because players can enable the flycheat with a few tricks

hope that helps!

Driber, it is not going to work I think. I can make you a screenshot of „the room with certain design” without going through the game. It’s easy using RoomViewer, and any graphic program like PhotoPaint using masks. In RoomViewer you can see every room in the game without playing.

Will, I think you could make the final room with 3 doors (levelend trigger behind one of them) and to open that doors player should have to find the proper sequence of switches/triggers(should be different for each door) .
Player’s task would be to tell which of the doors is the right one and explain this unique seqence to open that door. For sure you could add some objects in specified places of this room but those objects should be also placed earlier somewhere in your level ( player can extract objects from tr4 file).

I`ve been thinking along the same lines Qudlatopec

It has to be a sequence of sorts. Something that you could only know from playing the game and not through any kind of hacking or cheating. It would have to run right through the level though.

I`m going to do this. Eventually. In my next level.
