3D Studio max is simply the best program for the job, as Core worked with it themselfs
however, it's not the most popular program used in the community, so it might be difficult to get support from other members on 3dsmax

Rhino3d and metasaquia seem to be the top 2 programs used to create custom objects for TR

I think I heard there are problems with saving DXF files with the right format for strpix to handle.

Other than that, it is THE standard for 3D graphics in the gaming world. It is also VERY expensive. I did once see an older copy, about 3 versions old, selling for $1200 US.

there are many tools that convert 3ds files to the correct dxf formate which can be used in strpix
just search on the web

TO Dragon-182:yes buy it and you will never be repentant
iam learning it now it is very hard but with patience you can reach your aim
you can create very simple and very complicated objects

Hi Dragon-182,

MAX has been the games industry's favourite for a long time although it is slowly being ousted by Maya which is able to cope with higher polygon counts and has superior character animation and rendering. My advice is learn how to use both if you can. However, if you know how to use one 3D package, you can apply the same knowledge to any - they all use the same principles.

I have been using MAX for 5 years so if you need any help just ask.

if you want to make FMV's or animation 3D max is better!

But for normal think meta2.2LE & Rhino 2.0 is the best!

I've been hearing a lot lately about MAYA 3D. Apparantly it was used to make movies like Final Fantasy, etc. How does it compare to 3DStudioMax?

I think 3D Studio Max is the best. My uncle has 3D Studio Max 4, and it´s very easy and useful. The Eidos people used it to make Lara's models(game-wallpapers-FMV's), and all the meshes of Tomb Raider.

Woah! I got a new version and it was half that price!! It is simply *the* best though, but it doesn't work with strpix, which is annoying.

Well, it's sort of a wildcard really, sprung up out of nowhere, woke up one day and it was there... lol, I never used it, if it was used for Final Fantasy (Movie we talkin about here?) I expect it'd be good.

Maya used to be very expensive (more than MAX) but now they have dropped the price to try and compete with MAX. Maya continues to be used in preference to MAX for creating special effects, high-end animation, and anything which requires a very high quality level of realism. Basically Maya is more powerful whereas MAX is more flexible.

MAX was the tool of choice for the games industry because of its versatility and because it was cheap enough to buy multiple seats (licenses). However, now that Maya has introduced modules specifically designed for game designers and level builders it has started to become a genuine threat to MAX. Many games developers have moved over to Maya because they've complained that MAX isn't able to cope with a huge number of polygons at a time, and that it hasn't got as good a render engine as Maya.

Discreet Logic bought out Kinetix (former owners of MAX) a while back and this gives MAX a new edge because Discreet are the creators of a suite of tools(including 'Flame') which have been the highest quality industry standard in television and advertising post-production houses for many years. If they successfully apply their technical knowledge to MAX then it will kick Maya in the teeth once and for all.

But, in the meantime, Discreet and AliasWavefront (the makers of Maya) are at war with each other. Whoever wins isn't relevant because they are both essentially the same: learn one and you'll know how to master the other within a few weeks.

They both use the same process: create 3D model(s), texture model(s), animate model(s) and then render to whatever format (FMV for games, PAL/NTSC video for TV, single frames for digital matting in various ratios for cinema, etc).
