Yeah, but only really small files. Even if they are under 5mb, sometimes it wont upload them!! The largest thing I have uploaded to there was a wad which was in three pieces!!

In the geocities "How do I configure my FTP client?" page it suggests...

If you're experiencing problems with FTP, please try using EZ Upload by doing the following:

Sign in to your GeoCities account.
Click the "Upload & FTP" link.
Click the "Browse" button to search for the file that you would like to upload.
After selecting the file, click "Open." (If you have more than one file to upload, go to the next "Browse" button. You can upload up to 20 files at a time with the EZ File Upload utility, but total of all the files you're uploading can't be more than 5MB).
When you're finished selecting all the files you want to upload, click on "Upload Files."

This will obviously eliminate the potential of a problem with the account or upload server from the equation

If all goes well then it is a problem with the ftp client installation or dependancies.

If you try another ftp client - I recommend (Terrapin or Cute FTP) and they work OK then it's the ftp client.

You can try an unistall / reinstall to see if it resolves it - idf no joy either use another ftp client or contact the problem ftp clients author.

You could try it with CuteFTP, never had a problem with that personally, so...
