I am conducting a survey as to which elements within a custom level that players find particularly annoying. The catagories are as follows:1. Types of puzzles 2. Textures used 3. Level setting(place) or era 4. Enemies 5. Sound (music or sound effects) I am sure that this will help future Level creators construct more fulfilling and enjoyable levels. In my opinion puzzles can't be basic(pick this here and put there), wallpaper effect musn't exist(I hate that), the level place should be somewhere exotic or with many legends, enemys should be in their correct places(I hate when a sas guard appears in a tropical island, that doesn't make sense), and the soundtrack should have rythm. Anyone knows what's the music from the Charlie's Angels part in Scary Movie 2? I really would like to have it in one of my levels.[Edit: Just removed your Signature as Data Asked] [This message has been edited by The Sage Of Time (edited 11-20-2001).] IP: Logged |

I think the SAS on a tropical island is fine, depending on the time period of the level.1. Puzzles should make you think. 2. So far I haven't seen any levels with seriously bad textures. 3. Setting can be anywhere, I don't really care. But there should be some kind of story to it. 4. Enemies should not overwhelm you. I prefer puzzles and exploring. TR is not a shooter type game. 5. Sound...actually I prefer no BG music, or at least very quiet. The realism of the levels is enhanced by having no music, only sound effects. A good BG could be wind, waves, birds, etc. Just my opinion.

These things are good:
- interesting puzzles that make you think and/or are fun
- interesting textures, especially new ones
- fun assortment of baddies - I don't care if they fit the theme or not
- new and interesting environments - Egypt is great but it's getting old
- secrets
- new outfits
- short fly-bys - not too many though
- lots of places to explore
- fun surprises - for example, names or messages written on walls, I once found a HOOTERS poster in a level - that was fun!
- I love lots of water - waterfalls, ponds, fountains, pools - I just think it looks nice
These things are bad:
- really hard puzzles that have you tearing your hair out
- levels that are too dark - I like bright levels where I only occasionally have to use flares if ever
- not enough ammo/medi-packs
- large rooms with the same textures used everywhere
- really long crawl spaces
- underwater mazes and underwater timed doors
- overly dramatic music that loops repeatedly
- serious bugs that have been left in the level
- normal looking tiles that are really fire/spike traps
- bulls
Most of all, what I want is a level that's easy to install. I don't want to have to rename all ten files that go in the wads folder, I don't want to have to edit the .txt files. I don't know what a .dsk file is. Some zip files come with only a .TOM file with a weird name, after I convert the file and start the editor the level is still not there. If I rename the .TOM file to tut1.TOM and convert, the level is there but most of the objects have been replaced with weird stuff. I did look in the TRLE FAQ and all that is mentioned is how to convert a .TOM file, which would be fine if that's all we ever had to to play a level.
Just give us .TOM files, .txt files, .dat files...the basics. I don't mind using files that go in other textures or audio folders, as long as it's just an easy copy and replace job. Also, if you make a level, please put your e-mail in a readme file. If we're having problems installing your level, or really stuck and need help, or just want to write and say what a great job you did, we can't without an e-mail address. I applaud everyone who has made a Tomb Raider level. It is a very time consuming and frustrating experience with very little return for your effort except a few complaints and maybe a 'good job' or two. Without ya'll, us players would have nothing to play.
I appreciate Data starting this thread to give players somewhere to voice their opinions, maybe it will give the creators an idea of what we do/don't like. [Edit: Just removed your Signature as Data Asked]

I like the SMALL CITYS,Armybases(BUT with a CORRECT wad[not an egyptian-something-wad]) Things which don't have anything to do with agypt(I was there its very nice ,but levels aren't it),Jungles,High-fire-rate-weapons(AK-47[THX to Jliboy],M-16[THX to jliboy,too],MP5[originally TR and the real ones],Gettlings[but only WOULD be nice AT THIS MOMENT] I DON'T LIKE Anything what has to do with egypt Labyrinths Egyptian-Textures(this hyroglyhpehes,Broken walls) Hard puzzles NOT ENOUGH ENEMYS NO SASGUARDS,BADDYS,TROOPS,DOGS but at theire places SPHINXes,DEMIGOODS,SEHTS(one of them is enough),etc..... TOMBs in the desert Low-fire-rate-weapons(shotguns,crossbows,Grenadelaunchers,Rocketlaunchers,etc.....) UNREAL things(Aliens,etc....)[SETH isn't unreal for me but aliens and monsters[maybe DKII ones are OK],sphinxes,etc...] traps where it'S impossible to get through,etc....

I hate large open spaces in levels, i think they ruin the atmosphere of the level (and my PC slows down a lot in big rooms ) and If I see another Egyptian level I will go madIP: Logged |

Reading these posts proves one thing. You cannot create a level that everyone will like. It`s all very well players saying they like this and they like that but please remember that levels are difficult to make. They take an age to put together from their basic conception into a playable level. It`s a lot of really hard work that I sometimes think people don`t realise or forget. I don`t like the whole idea of one level being better than another or certain kinds of levels being better than others. It`s devisive. As long as it`s fun and the player gets some enjoyment out of it then the creator has done his job. I for one would like to give a huge pat on the back for EVERYONE who has ever made a level. No matter how small, how easy, how difficult, how Egyptian, how non Egyptian etc etc.... We NEED the variety. So my message to ALL level creators is... DO YOUR OWN THING!!!!!!!!!!! The TRLE let`s you create the TR level you always wanted. If others don`t like it...TOUGH!!!! If others do....GREAT!!!

I think that Baddies suck , I really hate just blasting away at a horde of baddies I pefer a more stratigic angle ( the sniper works well ) As for levels Tombs are getting really really old i think modern day settings are much more fun ( it looks like next gen has taken this approach ) I am currently experimenting with making the whole Tomb Raiding things more exciting, and i know ive been all talk recently but ive lots more time now to put thinks into practice. ------------------ Toy Story on Hold Currently Working On; The Dragon Ball TR Saga Often in the Chatbox / AOL Instant Messenger Name is : GoTenchiZ IP: Logged |

ENEMIES!!! They're always the same. You shoot enemy, enemy runs after you, one hour later he starts shooting, 2 hours later after using 100000 rounds of Beretta (pistol) ammo they die. ARRRRGHH!Kiopo IP: Logged | |
