I've play the TR series so many times now I could do it blindfolded. Just installed the Level Editor and wanted to know where I might find an articulate tutorial???? Also where to download some of the better homemade levels.

It looks like great fun and would probably keep me content until the next TR release.

Please help me out, the documentaion that comes with the LE makes my brain hurt.

hi Alarable,

I know the manual looks stressful, but I highly recommend you at least do the tutorial in the manual, it learns you all the basics of the LE

as for top notch levels, check out the top 10 at www.mprager.de

Once you get the hang of it, you may want to create new objects, copy an object from one file to another, or create new textures of your own. Go to http://network.tombraiderchronicles.com/jliboy64/index.html for some decent tools.

OK, the best way in my opinion is to open the Level editor application. Now repeat, so that you now have two level editors running.

Use one of them to build your level and the other to load in a map from C:\Program Files\Core Design\trle\maps that corresponds with the name of the object file (wad) that you are using for your project i.e city.wad (your object file) and city.prj + city.tga (the ready built level).

Using this technique, you can look at how the original city level was built whilst building your own.

Of course, you will have to read the manual at some point, and we have all done so.
Just enjoy yourself, or you will end up pulling your hair out

Thanks for the input. I did take a peek at the manual, but I was hoping to find something like, "Level Editor for Dummies," on the net.

I guess I'll just suck it up and get on with it, but I'm tellin' ya, my head nearly exploded when I saw that flow chart.

Thanks again.

I agree

but don't worry yourself with the flowchart, Alarable
I've never used it before myself, did the entire tutorial and I turned out to remain sane (well, give or take a few million dead braincells )
just take the tutorial one page at a time!

I just thought of another good tip ; use squared paper to plan your levels, it is so much better than just designing the level as you go and if you want to plan things vertically like a rounded roof draw a semi-circle on the squared paper and put lines through the squares (which represent 2 clicks high) I did this recently and it really works well.

I think that even the experienced level designers would agree this is a goood idea

Another good tip from the people at ReeceZ Co

ok, object making is not as important as level design, you g2 remember that....the best levels out there are not with custom objects...but with good gameplay and design

if you want custom objects,
JCO-Jliboy's Custom Objects is the best place for that with 15 wads, 45+outfits, and much more....

so check it out if you want, but i suggest you get into trle for at least 3 months then do custom object stuff

Jliboy's Custom Objects-14 custom wads....45 outfits.....and counting ;)

Thanks for the continued advice. I'm going to need your guidance for at least six months. I have a new found admiration for all of you who have mastered level editing.

Just to feel familiar with the Editor before actually creating, I downloaded a level (Blue Sphere) and managed to do the conversion thing as well as the renaming files and finally playing it. Also got a program called Strpix3 and am having a grand old time modifying the wad.

What I am not sure about is are there only a set number(names) of these WAD and TOM files that arw useable? Will I always have to title my creations by one of the existing filrnames?

And as for "Getting OUT While I'm Still Sane." - It was too late for that years ago.

Thank You All for your continued support and encouragement. Hugs & Kisses for Everyone.

I agree (again) with Reece, planning your level really helps, before I got the LE, I already had some plans drawn out on paper in a 3 dimentional view and by that I build my level, which is now known as Underground Tomb Of Ramses
so scetch, scetch, scetch!

that's what we're here for

no, there is a wonderfull program called TRwest (download link on the TRLE FAQ and community page at the top of this page) which allows you to add/replace objects in a wad
you can also copy an existing wad, rename it to your liking and adjust it with TRwest

WADS UUUUUUP!!!!!

OK, don't hate me for writing that. I've got a little sleep dep going on.

I got the TRwest program. Will poke around with it later.

Squared paper- you mean a quadrille pad. I have plenty of 'em. I even have a large one that is like a white board. I can use it over and over and over. I use them for designing fonts, cross-stitch and the very important Lode Runner Levels.

I'll try not to be too annoying in my apprentice phase. I do appreciate your help.

I can tell.

TRWest is useful, but it doesn't tell you what objects are required to make lara use a crowbar switch.

Sorry. I'm still annoyed with the fact I have to start my object placements all over again JUST because of a stupid switch.
