Didn't know if there was one, so I created one. It took 10 minutes to do it! http://trwad.tripod.com/Download/FontEdit.zip

Hi TRWad,

I've been testing your new FontEdit program and I can't get it to work. Here's what I did as a test:

First of all I replaced the letter 'A' with an 'X' of exactly the same size and position. In the second test I removed the letter 'A' completely by painting over it in the same background colour (black). In both tests, nothing was affected in the game - the original letter 'A' appeared both times.

The sequence I'm doing:

1) Open FontEdit / Open Font.pc in C:\Program Files\Core Design\trle\graphics\wads folder.

2) FontEdit confirms Font Loaded.

3) I save TGA. Edit TGA in PhotoShop. Save in same format to desktop.

4) In FontEdit I Load TGA on desktop. It confirms TGA Loaded.

5) I click Save Font. I check that Font.pc file in C:\Program Files\Core Design\trle\graphics\wads folder has been updated (by looking at its modified date).

6) I run Tomb4.exe. No change. I have recompiled (loaded level - output wad - converted) but it still has no effect.

Let me know if I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks.

WBM

I fixed a bug. The transperant background didn't work http://trwad.tripod.com/Download/FontEdit.zip

But remeber: I used the W to test it, but there are 2 of them. Make sure you edit the right one.

Hi TRWad,

I downloaded the updated version with the transparent background fix and did the following 2 tests:

1) Completely removed ALL letters. The TGA file is completely black. Loaded the TGA into FontEdit and Font Saved it to Font.pc location.

2) Repeated above but made TGA file completely white.

In both tests, all characters are still present in-game.

Note that it only effects the levels you rebuild (with Tom2pc.exe). It worked for me (I rebuilded the title screen)

WBM, I think his question is how to use it.
Am I right that this program basically converts between raw and TGA formats?

The only thing I see in the TGA. are a lot of numbers and marks.
What am I doing wrong or is this supposed to be like this.
Anyhow I don't understand the use of this program.

jeffrey, notice the name of the file...font.pc.
The file contains the font that the game uses for displaying text. So that is what you see, a font.

Aha, so you can change the way of how the numbers and marks are displayed.
A other type of numbers and stuff.
I understand it now.
Thank you.

Aktrekker: You'll have to ask TRWad for the full details. When KingSpyder, GokuZ and I previously tried to convert the font.pc file to RAW using PhotoShop, we couldn't produce a clean image. FontEdit produces a workable TGA (no distortion or artefacts in the image).

trlestuff and jeffrey:

1) Select the letter you want to change using a rectangle marquee. The selection area has to be exactly the same size as the character (don't select beyond the outer limits of the shape of the character).

For example, the original TR capital B with correct marquee selection:

2) Replace it with the new font of the same type. For example, the new capital B (Verdana font) occupying the same space as the old TR capital B:

3) Using FontEdit convert the TGA back to Font.pc format.

4) Rebuild title.wad. Run game - voila.

This is what the new (Verdana) capital B looks like in-game (on the title screen):

Okay, let me get this straight. Do you have to rebuild the title level only or every level for the new fonts to take?

Oh, and two bottles of champagne coming up!

If only I could shove Xmas presents down the phone line TrWad. May you and you Offspring live long.

Im suprised that people are still confused on using the prog though

Start "Font edit.exe"
Load "Font.pc" found in the graphix folder
Click on "Save TGA"
Open this tga in photoshop or a paint prog that will open tgas
Change the font to how you want it without going out of the letter/nimber boundary
Save the edited tga
Then in font edit load "font.pc" then load your edited TGA then save "font.pc"
In the level Converter convert "title.Tom" and Run TR and You have your very own font/or new colour

God bless us everyone, except for Cartman

Right, I understand how to use the program (as explained by GokuZ) but, what I'm trying to find out is if ALL the OTHER levels also need to be re-built after editing the fonts. For instance, does the first level in TR4 refrence title.tr4 for the legend or does it contain the fonts in itself for this task?

Hi KingSpyder,

Thanks for providing the bubbly.

If any changes are made to text in a level then the level itself must be re-built to apply the changes. You don't have have to re-build ALL the levels, only the one with the changes made to it. Text includes: Level names, Legends, and in-game Menus.

The title.wad does not act as a reference for the other levels. It should be treated in the same way as a 'level', i.e. if you make changes to anything in the title.wad (for example, the level names), you only have to rebuild the title.wad to see the changes applied.

Salut!

WBM
