I was working on some textures, cutting, resizing, pasting and the whole nine yards. Made a cool texture set, and continued to work with my level afterwards. But later on when I was getting ready for bed I shut down the computer, and it began shutting down but as it did, it flashed a stretched version of one of the textures I had been editing earlier. It displayed it as wallpaper for about 2 seconds and then it shut down. Well I thought that was weird, but didnt start the system back up to investigate.

The next day I had kinda forgot it even happened, but on shut down again it showed the same pic as stretched wallpaper. So I know now I have a problem. Well I ran scandisk, virus scan, defrag drive, checked wallpaper, screen saver, and even did a file search for the pic but none of this has worked. The texture file I was working on isnt even on my hard drive anymore because I keep that stuff on an external drive,so that tells me that the pic is in memory or something, I dont know, can somebody help me out please???

Have a look in the windows folder.
I hope you still know the name of that picture.
Anyway, track down that picture in your windows folder.
If you haven't found the picture, click with your right-mouse button on the desktop and have a look at the backgrounds.
Search for patrons and look or your picture is in it.
If you haven't found the picture I really have no idea what, or where it is.

I hope this works.

It must have somehow replaced the 'Windows is shutting down' graphic. This is in your windows system folder, but it is saved as a funny file format, not any common graphics format. I can't remember what... But it is in your windows system folder if it shows up after you shut down - that's for certain.

ok I think were getting warmer. I cant say that it replaced it,because I do still see the windows is shutting down graphics, but its right after this when the pic in question is shown for not even 2 seconds. I will look there anyway, maybe it added something to it or something.
But please everybody keep posting anything that comes to mind....thanks for all your help everybody.

No! I am wrong and you are very right.
I just tested shutting down, and to my surprise I was no longer seeing the windows is shutting down graphic anymore. Ok so more than likely this is the problem, so how do I fix it?

if you take a look at a file called 'Logow.sys' or 'Logos.sys'. You should be able to view these image files in most graphics apps, if not download the free 'Irfanview' from http://www.irfanview.com

To change it back you may find there is a file called 'Logos.old' but i'm not sure if it's the right one. If it is simply rename the extension back to 'SYS'.

Well good news, I did find that file, and there was another in its place, and it was the one that I had been seeing at shutdown,so I renamed it and now it works again. So thanks Jeffery,Raiders of tombs clone, and Dhama for your outstanding knowledge of this issue. So I guess this issue is closed unless somebody can tell me how the **** did that happen, and how to avoid it otherwise thanks again.
You Rock!
PS Irfanview is very nice, opens just about anything I throw at it.
