I find if I play the old Tomb Raider games now, most of the simple stuff I can more or less work out how it was done but there is one thing that has been racking my brain for a while now. In the first Tomb Raider, in the Atlantis level, Lara enters a room which has a rolling ball running down one side. She then has to push a block into its path, exit the room and then re-enter, by which time the ball has magically returned to its starting position. How did they do that? Anti-triggering it certainly doesn't work (I've tried). There's no real reason for asking, it's just one of those niggling things. (Then again it's probably really obvious and I'm just dopey).IP: Logged |

Speaking of strange past TR stuff, There is this thing... In Tomb Raider 2, Lara can touch both sides of the door without trouble. In TRLE, There is an invisible block that prevents you from touching one side of the door...IP: Logged |

qbg -There are two ways to avoid the "invisible block behind door" problem: If you donīt need to reach the other side of the door before it opens, just turn the door to the other side, 180 degrees (left mouse click over the door in trle). The invisible block will go to the other side and Lara will touch the door with no problem. If you need to touch the door from both sides, just place the door between rooms, not into a room. put a door in front of a (room) door with the 'invisable block' on the outside of the room.IP: Logged |

When I tried a test of this, I had a ball on a slope, one tile to trigger the ball and one to anti-trigger it. Stepping on the trigger set off the ball which stopped at the end. Then stepping on the anti-trigger did nothing, nor did stepping on the trigger tile again. The ball sat where it was. So how the original makers of TR get that ball up the slope ready to be triggered again when Lara left and re-entered the room? IP: Logged |

Can that strange thing be done an infinite ammount of times?IP: Logged |

I think it would be triggered an infinite number of times, the idea being you had to work out that, to get through the door where the ball comes to rest, you have to push the block in its path so the next time the ball comes down the slope, it is stopped by the block and you can get out the door and carry on. If the trigger could only be done say two or three times and you did not realise that you needed to push the block in its path, eventually the ball would roll down one last time and block the door so there would be no way to carry on the game. I hadn't read the other member's answers, but it can be done very easily.Build a room and flip it. The normal room is the one Lara sees. The flipped one is the one where the rolling ball rolls in the opposite direction in order it comes back to initial position of the "normal" room Lara can see. In this way, Lara just walking triggers a flip on and off for this room. Nice, uh? ------------------ New RHA the Mighty is coming. IP: Logged |

Yes Psiko I think I can see where you're coming from (took a few reads of your reply before it sunk in though! Doh!!) - I'll give it a go and see if I can get it to work. IP: Logged |

Nope - couldn't get it to work. I set the normal room, slope running right to left, ball at the top. Then created a flip room with slope running left to right. Triggered the ball. Triggered the flip map. The ball disappears. Triggered the "flip off" so it returns to the normal room, the ball is nowhere in sight. Where have I gone wrong? IP: Logged |

listen to me: it works, but you must use at least two other tricks. This is the first: the room must be high enough or during the flipped room the rolling ball goes deep down the room!!! Try looking at it NOT texturing completely the room, so you can see where the rolling ball goes. You must be good in the PRJ as you must avoid the rolling ball falls down in other directions (or below the room). For the second trick you need, we listen again once you get/don't get the rolling ball high again. IP: Logged |

I did build my flip room high (or the slope bit at any rate so that the ball would come to rest in its starting position). But I'll go and give it another try, maybe build it a bit higher. If I can just find out where that ball ends up it would help! Thanks for your help Psiko. IP: Logged |

OK - I tried it without the textures on the side of the slope and I see what you mean about the ball sinking down in the room. I'm obviously missing something here because I thought the flip room with the slope going in the other direction was supposed to lift the ball up so that it ends up at the top of the original slope, but it doesn't. I put all triggers in the same room so I could watch what happens, the slope changes but the ball stays on the same level. Sorry Psiko - what I have done wrong?IP: Logged |

Thanks Psiko, I would appreciate that. As for the zip-line in TR2 and TR3, I hadn't thought about that one but I would imagine the handles moving to the start again would be built into the animation of the object(?) - (don't take my word for it though, I'm certainly no expert on these things!) Just bumping this to the top again. When you're ready Psiko - (not hurrying you honest!) - I'd really be interested to know how this was done (just to stop my poor brain aching and so I can get some sleep!!)

well, I have the solution which maybe you will find "strange", but I can make it in some days... I remember this, but as you can read in this forum, I am a little bit in late for my levels, as I still need to send them to our website.. I have to test them tomorrow for the last time, then I can send them... after this, give me only few "hours" to relax LOL and I will do the prj for you IP: Logged |
