See, i recently noticed that some of my old dos games dont play when under ms-windows, while with others their sound fx dont come through.

So can any of you tech-boffins help me out?

i have WIN98-se on a PC.

I'm not sure why some won't play at all. I haven't had any problems yet. Maybe set the properties and make sure you provide them with extended and/or expanded memory, AUTO doesn't always work right.
As for sound, I hope your sound card has Sound Blaster compatibility, as that is easiest. You set some environment variables in the autoexec.bat. The game should have that information, or else your sound card should have it. Look under DOS installation.
