I´m a bit confused and nervous due to the Overall Texture Memory Limits of a level.

My first level had about 3100 texture infos and it worked ok...

Then my second level began to have serious problems with 2300 texture infos, showing wrong textures and crashing to desktop. I had to delete many objects from the WAD and change rooms shapes for it to work ok.

Now my third level has about 2500 texture infos and it´s running ok... at least for now, but I plan to add things to the WAD...

It was posted that 2300 is a safe number, but it´s not accurate. I know it depends on many things like total number of different room textures, WAD textures, perhaps active flames, lights, etc...

So anyone know exactly (or almost) when you´re near the limits? Does the converter says something to warn you among its text lines???

Hello mate, I think there are proberbly too many variables here as I don't think there is a set amount, rather that it depends on what else you have in the level. If there were a set limit it certainly wouldn't be more than 4096.
I know Data's Castle doomsday was quite high, I think it was 3098.

My level crashed because it was too big

Room Geometry and Aloc buffer as well as Texture info ( 3100 )

So I had to split the level in 2 parts... still the limit thing in trle is a real mysterie... There arent really facts WHICH might cause something

we can use 4MB of textures in total, saved as a TGA file.

TRwest tells you when you save your modified wad how many MB you are using for the textures inside the wad (for example: 2,3 MB)

This means that even if you DON'T use all the objects of your wad in the level, 2.3MB of 4MB in total are already used.

So, you can use 1,7MB only for the "PRJ textures".

To have an idea of how much "space" for your textures you are still available to use, crack your TR4 file (the level just converted) with "Jack the texture ripper", and have a look at the BMP of your level: the BLACK colored part is "how many textures I can still insert in my level" both for the PRJ either for the WAD.

There is a trick I found out to have the idea when you went OVER the texture limit of 4MB.

With the editor opened, try to select from the 3D window with the right click of the mouse) a texture which is really LOW in the TGA texture file. If you went OVER the limit, the editor DRAWS not a "black/purple noised" missing TGA in the bottom, but it DRAWS THE TEXTURES OF YOUR WAD, exactly below the textures TGA slot...!!!!
