What are the MIP files for?

they are low resolution objects for the original ones with the same name.

You don't need them in the wad, you need those objects just if you want the engine serves some resources for objects which are really far. They are set in the script.txt writing a square-radius since the normal object is flipped into the MIP one to avoid wastings of resources, because the "shin" MIP-object has less polygons.
